A highly anticipated Halo project, known by the codename Project Tatanka and under development by Certain Affinity for several years, has reportedly been terminated, as revealed by an insider. Despite the launch of Halo Infinite in 2020, which marked the latest installment in the series, plans to utilize it as a long-term live-service platform may have been curtailed due to a decline in its player base. Recent reports suggest that 343 Industries is actively engaged in the development of the next primary Halo game, offering hope to fans. However, a separate Halo franchise game crafted by Certain Affinity has received disheartening news with its cancellation.

During the XboxEra podcast, insider Shpeshal Nick asserted that Certain Affinity’s Halo game has been scrapped for reasons that remain undisclosed. Speculations suggest that this enigmatic project initially started as a battle royale-style mode for Halo Infinite but eventually evolved into a standalone game. According to earlier reports, development on Certain Affinity’s Halo project commenced in Spring 2020. There’s a possibility that some of the work from the canceled project might find its way into Halo Infinite or a future Halo installment, although this remains speculative. In 2022, the studio indicated a commitment to strengthening its collaboration with 343 Industries and focusing on the evolution of Halo Infinite. If this partnership persists, Certain Affinity may continue contributing to other Halo projects beyond Project Tatanka.

Speculations fueled by leaks suggest that Certain Affinity’s Project Tatanka was initially conceived as a battle royale mode for Halo Infinite. Some enthusiasts advocate for the introduction of such a mode in Halo Infinite to revitalize its popularity. Despite the incorporation of notable features like Firefight, Forge, a custom games browser, numerous new maps, and more since its launch, Halo Infinite has struggled to regain its standing among Xbox’s most beloved games.

Fans argue that a battle royale mode could seamlessly integrate into Halo Infinite, given the game’s support for expansive maps, diverse vehicles and weapons, and a relatively high time-to-kill—characteristics commonly found in successful battle royale titles. Beyond offering a fresh and engaging gameplay experience, the immense popularity of the battle royale genre might serve as a catalyst for Halo to reclaim its former prominence.

Alternatively, some fans propose that 343 Industries should consider remaking classic Halo games to rejuvenate the franchise. With over 15 years since the release of Halo 3, a widely cherished installment, the enduring gameplay might appeal to both loyal fans and newcomers. The future trajectory of the Halo franchise ultimately rests on the decisions made by Microsoft and 343 Industries, and only time will reveal the chosen direction.
