Sonic Superstars

Sega is ushering in the new year of 2024 with an updated version of Sonic Superstars. The previous year saw a flurry of thrilling Sonic content, culminating in the October release of Sonic Superstars. In contrast to the open-world 3D approach of Sonic Frontiers, Superstars takes a nostalgic leap back to Sonic’s side-scrolling glory days, offering a 2D platforming experience where Sonic and his friends race to thwart a trio of villains led by Dr. Eggman. Sonic Superstars introduces new elements to the classic high-speed gameplay, including unlockable Chaos Emerald powers and both co-op and competitive multiplayer modes.

Although Sonic Superstars didn’t meet Sega’s sales expectations after its late launch last year, Sonic Team remains dedicated to enhancing the game through online updates and DLC content. Alongside routine bug fixes, Sonic Superstars introduced LEGO versions of Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, complementing the previously available Sonic and Eggman pre-order skins. Additionally, a revamped version of Amy, reflecting her appearances from Sonic Adventure onward, has been included. Notably, a festive holiday character skin for Sonic was introduced in December, reminiscent of the one integrated into Sonic Frontiers in late 2022.

The most recent patch for Sonic Superstars has been released on all major platforms. As outlined in the patch notes, Update 1.15 introduces a feature allowing players to reset their scores in Time Attack Mode. It’s important to note that this reset action applies solely to the scores stored in the user’s local save data, while the scores displayed on Sonic Superstars‘ online leaderboards will remain unaffected. Additionally, Update 1.15 incorporates several bug fixes, although specific details about these fixes are not provided.

Shortly after the introduction of the holiday-themed skin in Sonic Superstars, a dataminer has surfaced claiming to have discovered hints regarding upcoming DLC. These clues suggest the possible inclusion of Sonic’s brooding rival, Shadow the Hedgehog, although speculation leans towards it being Sonic donning a Shadow costume rather than a direct appearance of the dark hedgehog in a classic style. Additionally, leaked source code mentions the potential introduction of a “retro diner” outfit for Amy, playfully dubbed “IHop Amy.”

Meanwhile, Sonic Team is kicking off 2024 with a more modest update for Sonic Superstars. This update introduces a reset option for Time Attack Mode and includes some minor quality-of-life bug fixes. Despite a slower start in sales, Sega remains optimistic about Sonic Superstars in the new year, especially with the recently-launched third season of the Sonic Prime animated series and the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog 3 film, both of which could contribute to increased interest in Superstars as 2024 unfolds.

    • The score reset function will only delete the scores stored in your local save data. Scores on the online leaderboards will not be affected by the reset.
