Sony has provided further details regarding the specifications and unique features of the upcoming PC version of Helldivers 2, the cooperative multiplayer shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. The game is set to be released in early February 2024, simultaneously on both PC and PS5.

Originally recognized as a multiplayer classic during the early years of the PS4, Helldivers (2015) blended chaotic co-op gameplay with a witty touch of sci-fi satire. Drawing inspiration from iconic films like Starship Troopers and Aliens, the game immersed players in the battle between “Super Earth” soldiers and waves of aliens and cyborgs. However, the sequel, announced in May 2023, revealed a significant departure from the original Helldivers. Unlike the top-down “twin-stick” arcade shooter format of its predecessor, Helldivers 2 has transformed into a third-person shooter. Additionally, the release date was adjusted from 2023 to February 8, 2024.

In a detailed post on the PlayStation Blog, Arrowhead provided an overview of the system requirements for players to access Helldivers 2 on PC, coupled with the confirmation of a noteworthy multiplayer feature: crossplay. The integration of cross-platform play has become increasingly significant, expanding the potential player base for multiplayer games by enabling collaboration among players on different platforms. Helldivers 2 is set to embrace cross-platform play, facilitating interaction between players on PS5 and those on PC. In terms of PC specifications, the game will offer four distinct targets based on performance levels: Minimum, Recommended, Performance, and Ultra.

Although some may perceive Helldivers 2 as a “PlayStation exclusive,” its concurrent release on PC and PS5, coupled with cross-play compatibility, positions it as a genuinely multi-platform game, even though it excludes other systems. This approach aligns with the game’s emphasis on teamwork, a key element in Helldivers 2’s design. Arrowhead’s outlined PC specifications are also relatively modest at the lower end, ensuring that players with a diverse range of machines can partake in the cooperative mayhem and dark humor within the Helldivers universe.

In this particular realm, Helldiver soldiers descend from orbit to combat hordes of aliens and cyborgs, striving to propagate the concept of “Managed Democracy” throughout the universe. The games portray “Super Earth” as a thinly veiled authoritarian regime, injecting a sinister undertone into the comedic mishaps of soldiers unintentionally crushing each other with drop pods or poorly aimed explosives.

Helldivers 2 marks a significant milestone for developer Arrowhead Game Studios. It serves as the studio’s inaugural release since the original Helldivers and represents its venture into the realm of third-person shooters. Known for quirky titles primarily operating on a 2D plane, the Sweden-based studio gained acclaim for Magicka, a game that introduced one of the most distinctive RPG magic systems in the world of video games. Helldivers 2 stands out as Arrowhead’s most “mainstream” project, featuring a camera perspective and gameplay style that could resonate with a broader audience. Successfully blending its established reputation for a unique tone and atmosphere with the competitive landscape of multiplayer-focused shooters might propel Helldivers 2 to heightened popularity upon its launch.
