The future holds substantial plans for the Fallout: London team

The team leads behind the highly anticipated Fallout: London mod for Fallout 4 have disclosed their interest in venturing into the development of a new game following the release of Fallout: London in April. The decision was influenced significantly by the impact of 2022’s The Forgotten City, as mentioned by the project leader.

Scheduled for release on April 23, Fallout: London, crafted by Team Folon, promises a comprehensive total conversion mod that transports players to the post-apocalyptic landscape of London. Unfolding in the year 2237, situated between the events of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, and approximately 63 years before the Sole Survivor emerges from Vault 111 in Fallout 4, the mod’s narrative revolves around awakening in an underground lab. Players must navigate an escape to the surface following a raid by a rival faction. In development since 2019, the mod reportedly features an open world equivalent in size to Fallout 4’s, with five smaller hubs collectively spanning an area akin to the Far Harbor DLC.

In a recent interview with Dual Shockers, Team Folon’s lead developer Dean Carter and lead 2D artist Emily Kemp discussed Fallout: London’s development. Carter, during the conversation focused on Fallout: London, took a moment to touch upon the studio’s future plans. While acknowledging that he couldn’t speak on behalf of the entire team, Carter expressed his hope that Team Folon would evolve into an independent game studio, drawing inspiration from the success of Modern Storyteller, the developer behind The Forgotten City. Kemp also shared her perspective, describing Modern Storyteller’s achievements as “aspirational.”

The origins of 2021’s The Forgotten City trace back to a 2015 Skyrim mod bearing the same name, which garnered recognition from the Australian Writer’s Guild. Motivated by this achievement, the mod’s lead developer and writer, Nick Pearce, went on to establish Modern Storyteller, transforming the mod into a standalone game. While Modern Storyteller had the advantage of government investment, a benefit unlikely for the UK-based Team Folon, Dean Carter, the lead developer of Team Folon, remains optimistic about their potential.

Although it remains unclear whether Carter and Team Folon aspire to redevelop Fallout: London into a standalone game or if they have concrete plans, Carter expresses confidence that the team has invested too much effort to disband after Fallout: London’s release. He remarked, “We’ve worked too hard and too long to not do something.”

Reflecting on precedents like The Forgotten City’s successful transition from mod to professional studio, and Terra Invicta developer Pavonis Interactive’s earlier acclaimed XCOM mods, one may question whether Team Folon is preemptively considering their trajectory. Nevertheless, the achievements of Pavonis and Modern Storyteller illustrate the viability of such a career evolution.
