A senior member of Rocksteady has recently addressed the live service controversy surrounding Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, reassuring fans that the game will meet their expectations. Five years after the conclusion of the Batman: Arkham Knight storyline, Rocksteady introduced a new spin-off, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Departing from the Arkhamverse formula, this upcoming installment focuses on the Task Force X as they embark on a perilous mission against the brainwashed heroes of the DC Universe.

Given the significant shift from the usual Arkhamverse approach, the game has naturally sparked division among players, generating various controversies since its 2020 announcement. One major point of contention revolves around Suicide Squad‘s live service elements, including the battle pass and gear system. In light of recent unsuccessful live service games like Marvel’s Avengers, these features have provoked a substantial backlash against Rocksteady’s latest superhero title. This criticism has intensified amid several delays leading up to the February release date, raising concerns that the issues players have with Suicide Squad may not have been adequately addressed.

Darius Sadeghian, the Product Director at Rocksteady Studio, recently discussed the perceived live service aspects of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League with PLAY Magazine (as reported by GamesRadar). Contrary to the apparent live service elements, Sadeghian clarified that his team does not categorize Suicide Squad under the traditional live service label. Instead, he emphasized their focus on developing a multiplayer co-op game that cultivates “a sense of flow and trinity between all our gameplay systems.” Additionally, he reassured concerned players that Suicide Squad still retains the essence of the DNA that characterizes the Batman: Arkham series.

Sadeghian elaborated on how the Rocksteady team aimed to establish a committed player community within Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, intending to immerse players as integral members of the Task Force X on a global level. In pursuit of this goal, he outlined an array of “social features,” including taunts, a social squad feature, and competitive elements integrated into online leaderboards. Additionally, Sadeghian expressed Rocksteady’s commitment to sustaining long-term engagement by offering supplementary story missions, new locations, diverse gear, costumes, collectible trinkets, and even extra playable characters—all of which will be accessible at no additional cost upon the game’s release.

Amid numerous controversies, Suicide Squad encounters a challenging journey, particularly following the leak of potentially divisive story details in December. Despite these hurdles, Sadeghian is optimistic that players will ultimately embrace the game’s online-centric format, similar to the reception of Rocksteady’s well-received Batman: Arkham games. The true test of this new format is imminent, with the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League scheduled for February 2.
